Barça Stumbles in El Clásico, but Remains Top of the Table

A Mbappé double punishes the Blaugrana's lack of finish (1-2) in a hard-fought match marked by physical play and highly contested refereeing decisions.

El Clásico began with a clear tactical battle in midfield. Real Madrid deployed a deep defensive block designed to neutralize Lamine Yamal's drives and disrupt the playmaking of Pedri. Barça controlled the lion's share of possession (exceeding 60%), attempting to unbalance the visitors' structure through extended build-up play and crosses searching for Raphinha and Anthony Gordon.

As the first half headed toward a scoreless draw with little danger in either penalty box, a defensive miscue by the hosts while playing out from the back allowed Kylian Mbappé to pounce on a loose ball and put away the 0-1 in the 41st minute—a psychological blow right before the halftime whistle.

Hansi Flick's side pushed their lines forward and raised the pressing intensity after the break. That persistence paid off in the 61st minute when Raphinha latched onto a loose ball inside the box following a corner kick, striking a precise volley to equalize at 1-1. Following the goal, Barcelona played their strongest minutes of the night, pinning the opposition in their own half and coming close to taking the lead on a couple of dynamic wing attacks.

However, with just four minutes remaining in regulation (86'), as Barça committed numbers forward in search of a winner, a rapid counterattack from the Madrid side ended with Mbappé beating Joan García to seal the 1-2 victory.

Beyond the tactical breakdown and the missed opportunities in the final third, the match left severe frustration on the Barça bench and among the home crowd over the officiating. A series of uncalled fouls during Barcelona's build-up play, paired with inconsistent bookings in 50-50 challenges, repeatedly stalled the home team's momentum, reinforcing the feeling among the home supporters that borderline calls once again tipped in favor of the opposition.

Despite the setback, Barça remains alone atop the LaLiga standings with a three-point cushion over their rivals, forcing the locker room to tighten up defensive stability heading into the upcoming fixtures.
